Why a destination wedding

Getting married a bit later than most of our friends, we had the opportunity to attend and participate in MANY wedding before planning ours, which gave us a good perspective into what we wanted for our own wedding. Some of our most favorite weddings were those that left us with an experience, something more than the traditional ceremony and reception. We wanted to create something that our friends and family would remember and talk about for years to come!

Guest Experience

A destination wedding gives your guests an opportunity to travel and seems to bring people together in a shared experience more than just a one-day event. At least that’s how we felt when we were a part of other destination weddings.

Why Long Beach & Hotel Maya?

We always knew we wanted to get married in the morning and hop on a cruise that same day, with as many of our friends and family who wanted to join us and keep the party going!

So we knew Long Beach would be our destination since the port and cruise ship terminal was right there. We opted for a Carnival cruise to Ensenada, Mexico, which is one of the many reasons we chose Hotel Maya for our wedding. Hotel Maya is located on Queensway Bay just adjacent to Port of Long Beach, next to the Queen Mary and across from Shoreline Village. Our guests had a two minute shuttle ride to the cruise ship terminal after our morning ceremony and brunch reception, the logistic worked out very well.

Beachfront Ceremony Locations

Hotel Maya grounds are beautiful and tropical, with a touch of Aztec modern, and offers great views of the Long Beach shoreline. There were many spaces conducive for group gatherings, which was key in planning a destination wedding with a guest list close to 100. The hotel’s open-air bar and restaurant was a great gathering spot for people to grab drinks and mingle prior to our events. The pool was also a huge hit! There are multiple ceremony and reception spaces on site to choose from. Mother Nature threw a major kink in our wedding day and we were grateful for additional options/areas to host our ceremony and reception. The rooms at Hotel Maya are elegant, clean and comfortable, the ocean views from the patio are incredible. We received a group rate discount with our room-block reservation however the nightly rate at Hotel Maya is a bit pricy given location and Hilton status.

As mentioned we had a brunch reception and the spread provided by the hotel’s catering department was superb, so many wonderful flavors and variety. We worked with outside vendors for music, flowers/décor, cake and photography. We brought our own wine to have with our hosted bar, as I recall the corking feeds were reasonable.

Overall, the planning process with Hotel Maya was fairly easy and strait forward. The in-house coordinator did change once during our 12-month planning but otherwise we were please with their service.

Why Kaboo Photography

Having Kaboo Photography travel from Sacramento to Long Beach to shoot our wedding was so special and so much appreciated! We worked with Kaboo for our engagement session and she did a great job getting my rather “photo-challenged” husband to relax and have fun with our shoot. We had multiple locations for our engagement session and ended up with so many great shots (I still have many of our engagement pictures up in my house almost 7 years later)! Kaboo provides full access to all photos so you have the ownership of all your pictures without having to choose a selected number. I would say Kaboo’s editing style is light and modern which worked very well with the vibe of our wedding. And her timeline is so quick! We had our edited wedding photos in under 3 weeks! In addition to being a wonderful photographer Kaboo is also a great energy to have around on your wedding day. She was fun and professional, she took charge when needed (which was a lot lol) and helped immensely with day of coordination. She was considerate with time when shooting our family & friends and bride & groom sessions, allowing us to spend as much time with our guests as possible. Some of my favorite photos from that day were the moments Kaboo captured prior to our ceremony, the process of getting ready, the chaos of the weather and last-minute changes, my fiancé coming to the bridal suite to help calm my anxiety, she got it all.

I was so pleased when Kaboo reached out for my “personal content” for her blog and shared some of our re-edited photos, it was very fun to relive that day 5 years later!
